This is one of the jobs we’re most proud of. We installed a GAF Woodland designer shingle roof, what we call “woodland shake,” in Castlewood Gray. At about 97 squares, including waste (not counting caps or starter), it’s a big roof. The homeowner chose Woodland because he wanted the best.
It’s a complex hip roof, and on a roof like this there’s no room for cutting corners. We never cut corners, but on a home like this it matters even more. For this homeowner, budget wasn’t the deciding factor. Doing it right was.

We upgraded the starter shingles. Woodland needs a special starter, and the starter course is what locks down the first row of shingles at the edges of the roof, where wind tries to get under them.
Ice and water shield around the full perimeter
We ran ice and water shield around the full perimeter of the roof. The edges are one of the most vulnerable parts of a roof to wind-driven rain, so we sealed every edge, not just part of it.
Ice and water shield at all flashings
We also put ice and water shield at all the flashings. Flashings are where the roof meets walls, dormers and penetrations, and those are common leak points, so each one got an extra layer of protection underneath.
The GAF Golden Pledge warranty
This roof carries the GAF Golden Pledge, with 25-year workmanship coverage. Not every roof or roofer can offer it: the Golden Pledge requires five qualifying GAF accessories and a GAF Master Elite contractor. We are GAF Master Elite, a certification held by the top 2% of roofing contractors.
