Hail storms roll through North Carolina’s Piedmont every spring and summer. When one hits your neighborhood, it’s hard to know what to do next: is the roof damaged, who do you call, and how does the insurance part work? Here is what to expect, step by step, from the roofing crew that has been inspecting storm-damaged roofs across the Triad since 2012.

Step 1: Make Sure Everyone Is Safe and Stop Active Leaks
Stay off the roof. If water is coming in, move valuables, catch drips and call for an emergency roof repair. Take your own photos of anything you can see safely from the ground: dented gutters, broken siding, hail on the lawn next to a coin or ruler.
Step 2: Get a Free Hail Damage Inspection
Hail damage on shingles is often invisible from the ground. Our hail and storm damage roof inspection follows the same documented process every time:
- Perimeter check. We walk the property first. Gutters, downspouts, window trim and other soft metals dent easily, so they show the size and direction of the hail.
- Attic and decking check. When we can get into the attic, we look for water stains, daylight and moisture.
- Walking the roof when it’s safe. We check shingles or metal panels, flashing, vents, pipe boots and ridge caps up close for hail bruising, cracked or missing shingles, granule loss and wind lifting.
- Drone overview. A drone gives a full overhead view, including steep slopes that aren’t safe to walk.
- Photo documentation. We photograph what we find the same way on every job, so you see exactly what we saw.

The inspection is free. If you want a formal written report, for your records or to share with your insurance company, it’s a paid option, and that cost is credited toward the work if you hire us.
Step 3: Decide Whether to File a Claim
Once you’ve seen the photos, you decide whether to contact your insurance company. Whether to file, and what is covered, is between you and your insurer. Read your policy, note your claim deadline and keep copies of everything.
Step 4: The Adjuster Inspection
Your insurance company will usually send an adjuster to look at the roof. If you’d like, we can be there when the adjuster inspects, to point out the damage we documented. You work with your own insurance company on your claim; we don’t negotiate or settle claims.

Step 5: Review the Estimate
If your insurer issues an estimate, we can go through it with you line by line and compare it with what we found on the roof, so you understand what it covers and what it doesn’t. Your insurance company makes the coverage decisions.
Step 6: Repair or Replacement
If the roof needs work, we’ll schedule it, protect your property, tear off the damaged roof down to the decking and photograph the job before, during and after.

Watch Out for Storm Chasers
After a big storm, out-of-town crews often show up knocking on doors. Before you sign anything, check that the company has a local address and real local reviews, ask who will actually do the work, and get the warranty in writing. Statewide Roofing Specialist has been roofing in the Piedmont Triad since 2012 and is a GAF Master Elite contractor, a status held by the top 2% of roofing contractors. Every roof gets our 5-year standard workmanship warranty. As a GAF Master Elite contractor (the top 2% of roofing contractors) we also offer the GAF Silver Pledge with 10-year workmanship coverage and the GAF Golden Pledge with 25-year workmanship coverage, so workmanship warranties run up to 25 years.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if hail damaged my roof?
Look first at soft metals: dents in gutters, downspouts and window trim are a sign hail was big enough to matter. Roof damage such as bruised shingles and granule loss is often not visible from the ground, which is why an up-close inspection helps.
Should I get on the roof myself after a storm?
No. Wet or damaged roofs are dangerous. Check from the ground and inside your attic, and let a roofer handle anything on the roof.
Is a hail damage inspection free?
Yes. Our hail and storm damage inspections are free. A formal written report is available as a paid option, and that cost is credited toward the work if you hire us.
Will you meet my insurance adjuster?
Yes, if you’d like us there. We can be there when your adjuster inspects the roof to point out the damage we documented.
Will insurance pay for my roof?
That’s between you and your insurance company. Your insurer decides what is covered. We document the damage, can attend the adjuster meeting and review the estimate with you.
What if I need an emergency repair?
We offer 24/7 emergency roof repair to stop active leaks after a storm.
